Reviews Summary
Customers say this binder is well-made, durable, and versatile for organizing notes, sketches, and projects. Many appreciate the A5 size, quality paper, and ability to add and remove pages easily. The removable-page system works well for managing multiple projects and keeping active materials organized. However, a frequent concern is that the rings are too small to hold substantial amounts of paper, causing pages to rip or overflow. Some users wish for back pockets and additional paper options. Overall, customers value the craftsmanship and functionality, though capacity limitations are a notable drawback for heavy users.

Nice addition to my pocket journal! Great Customer Service.

I’ve been using my pocket journal for about a year, and have really grown to enjoy the product. When I noticed a hole in my daily work organization , I looked to Lochby for a solution. I was reluctant for awhile to move into an A5 size because I didnt think it would be enough room for sketches and notes, but it has been great. Also, I wasnt sold on having a bound notebook with no removable pages, but once Lochby released the Binder option I knew i had to have it. Side note, I had an issue with the product originally and Liz from customer service promptly resolved that issue, without question. GREAT customer service. The inside of the cover holds my business cards, a Pocket AI device, a 6” scale ruler, and some pencil lead. These items do not begin to fill up the pockets.

If you are looking for a top notch notebook cover, look no further.

Small Rings - Doesn’t Hold a Lot of Paper

I was hoping to use this as a daily planner with room for notes on the dot grid paper, too. Unfortunately, the rings are smaller than I expected and I’m not able to use it as efficiently as I’d hoped.

I do like the durability of the exterior but the black canvas fabric picks up a great deal of fuzzies.

An upgrade to my Field Journal

I picked up a second Lochby Journal because my Field Journal quickly filled with notes, ideas, and tasks. Despite using tabs, I struggled to keep everything organized. Switching to the Field Binder made a noticeable difference—it allows me to add, remove, and reorganize pages effortlessly. Once a section is full, I can store it in my A5 library and keep my active journal streamlined.

It only missed a 5 star review as there is no pocket/sleeve on the back which I found very useful on the Field Journal.

Love it -- minus one star for paper options

I LOVE this binder. It's exactly what I wanted, so much so that I had to buy one even though I had previously purchased the Field Journal just a few months before this was available. Two suggestions/requests: first, more paper options! Please, please make planner refills for the Field Binder! Second: the Field Journal has a small webbing loop on the inside of the back cover that's perfect for tucking in the latch hook so that it's not flopping around when the journal is open. The Field Binder sadly doesn't have this loop and I really wish it did! A possibly helpful tip for others: I found an adjustable 6-ring binder punch online, and since I had already purchased a bunch of Lochby refill paper for my Field Journal, I painstakingly took apart a few of the notebooks, trimmed the bound edges, and made it work.

    Love this Journal

Great companion to have on the go. The paper is exquisite to use for rough watercolor pictures and all around drawing. Goes with me EVERYWHERE.

FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

What paper size and standard does it use?

A5 6‑hole refills (5.8" x 8.3"). Compatible with most A5 6‑ring systems (e.g., Filofax‑style A5). Not compatible with U.S. half‑letter (5.5 × 8.5 in) or 3‑ring paper.

Does it come with sheets?

Yes. The Field Binder A5 includes 36 A5 dot‑grid sheets (72 pages) of Tomoe River 68 gsm paper—smooth and fountain‑pen friendly.

How many sheets can it hold?

The 6‑ring mechanism comfortably holds up to about 80 sheets of 68 gsm paper (160 pages front and back). Capacity varies with paper thickness and the inserts you use.

Will it work with fountain pens and wet inks?

The included Tomoe River 68 gsm sheets are fountain‑pen friendly with excellent dry times and minimal bleed.

Does it have pockets?

Yes. There’s a full‑length back pocket for documents or a phone, plus four interior pockets for cards, tools, and accessories—along with an elastic pen loop.

Does it lay flat? Can I fold the cover back?

It lays flat on a desk. We don’t recommend folding the cover back on itself due to the ring mechanism.

How do I open/close the rings?

Use the mechanism’s tabs or levers—don’t pull on the rings. Press both sides to close until you hear a click.

Can left‑handed users write comfortably?

Yes. The binder opens flat, and the integrated writing board helps with edge support.

Is it waterproof?

The Field Binder A5 uses waxed canvas for water resistance (not full waterproofing). Light rain and splashes will bead off; reapply wax over time to maintain water resistance.

Is the ring mechanism replaceable?

The mechanism isn’t user‑replaceable. If you have an issue, contact support for repair or replacement options.
